Micro Fiction Monday: End of Summer (BEDS 019)

I dipped my big toe in first. The water was cold—freezing, even—but so was the air around me. The sun was just beginning to shimmer above the horizon. It was too early to be awake, and far too soon to be leaving.

At least, that’s what everyone said. But summer was ending, and already I could see a yellow tint on the leaves above the cabin. Registration for classes had come and gone, and back-to-school ads plagued the radio that my sister had brought down to the beach every day. Now, the car was getting packed and loaded, and soon our summer home would disappear behind the mountains for another nine months.

I lowered myself onto the dock, easing the rest of my foot into the water. I swung my other leg around and eased it in, too, shivering as I did. There was no time to be slow, no time to get used to the temperature. So I slowly swung my legs beneath the water, hands gripping the dock, and stared off at the horizon as the sun inched its way up. The other cottages dotting the lake remained dark, and the birds and crickets remained quiet.

In that moment, it was just me and the lake. Just how I liked it.

Eventually, my peace ended. I was called back to the car, the engine revved, and we pulled out of the driveway for the last time. With my sister already asleep on my shoulder, I watched as our house disappeared out of sight, taking my summer with it.

Micro Fiction Monday: Summer Is

Summer is feet on the dashboard, plastic warmed by the shining sun. It’s the howling wind when you roll down the car window, the country station blasting through the speakers. Summer is an excuse to eat ice cream, licking the stray drips off your fingers. It’s running around barefoot, abandoning your sandals to feel the sand, the pavement, the grass beneath your toes.

Summer is possibility. It’s the feeling that longer days mean more time, that you can hop on the wind and ride it for miles. Summer is temporary freedom—from school, from work, from responsibility. It’s a day at the beach, or at the park, or just driving around doing nothing at all.

Summer is everything, and nothing. It’s a vacation, a road trip, cramming every second full with something new and exciting. It’s a day spent at home, in the comfort of air conditioning, licking a popsicle from the comfort of your own couch. Summer is both comfort and excitement, and everything in between.

Summer is the hope that, at the end of it all, you’ll have an amazing story to tell.

Disney World Adventures (BEDS #7)

So I just got back from Disney World a couple days ago. It was my second time going, and honestly...

I loved it. I loved it so, so, sooo much.

Some of the fantastic highlights include, but are not limited to:

  • Eating chocolate cake
  • Meeting Woody and Buzz from Toy Story
  • Meeting Anna and Elsa from Frozen
  • Meeting Tiana and Naveen from The Princess and the Frog (do you see a running trend here?)
  • Eating sushi and shopping at the Japan pavilion in Epcot
  • Going through the Animation Academy in Hollywood Studios 100000000 times and learning to draw Olaf, Rapunzel, Lewis and Genie
  • Buying stuffed animals
  • Going to see shows like the Beauty and the Beast show in Hollywood Studios and the Festival of the Lion King in Animal Kingdom
  • Scaring friends with creepy stuffed monkeys
  • Dancing to the Macarena and YMCA in Downtown Disney
  • Also in Downtown Disney: Earl of Sandwich (oh, hallelujah)
  • Wearing one of the cutest dresses EVER on my birthday
  • Taking pictures in front of Cinderella Castle in Magic Kingdom
  • Going on Spaceship Earth a zillion times in Epcot
  • Watching the fireworks above the castle in Magic Kingdom
I'm gonna stop there, because listing all of the fantastic stuff we did would take waaaaaay too long! Just know that it was wonderful and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Since my pictures are still on my camera somewhere, I'll hold off on sharing pictures. (For now.)

I can't WAIT to go again!

Until later,

Greetings from the Past!

Hello, my dear readers! Once again, I have abandoned you to go on vacation. This time, I'm in Disney World. Yes, Disney World. Be jealous.

The next few blog posts, will be pre-written and pre-uploaded before I leave for my trip. While there is wifi on the resort...well, I'll be in Disney World. I'll be too busy partying with Mickey to worry about blogging.

(I will, however, brag about it on Twitter. Should it happen.)

(I'll also upload pictures. Should it happen.)

I did this whole scheduling-blog-posts-ahead-of-time thing last time I went on vacation, and honestly, I really love this feature. I've actually been doing it for other blog posts, not just ones I've scheduled before a trip. (In case you didn't notice, the last few uploads have been going up at exactly 4 pm, every time. Not a coincidence. I'm not THAT consistent.) It's a great way to make sure that my blog posts go up on time, and that I don't miss any because of my stubborn, uncooperative brain. Or my procrastination and general laziness.

It's also nice to know that it's done, y'know? I don't have to worry about it, or scramble to come up with an idea at the last minute.

I might have to do this more often.

For today's question...ARE YOU ALL JEALOUS THAT I'M IN DISNEY WORLD? (Don't even lie, I know you are.)

Until later,

- Justyne
